Founded in
1960, Sun City is a master-planned retirement community
built by the Del Webb Corporation. It's the largest
retirement community in the nation. Sun City is
world-famous for its active, resort retirement lifestyle
and has set the standard for other retirement communities
to follow.
Sun City is self-contained
with many retail centers and restaurants offering a
variety of shopping, dining and services. The town is
unincorporated and depends on Maricopa County for services
such as law enforcement, street repairs and zoning
protection.
Eleven golf courses and
seven recreation centers provide swimming, tennis, bowling
and a myriad of other activities. The Lakeview Recreation
Center even has a lake for fishing.
Volunteerism is strong in
Sun City. The Sun City Prides is a nonprofit corporation
which assists Maricopa County in keeping Sun City clean.
The group has more than 300 members who help maintain the
beauty of the 217 miles of streets and medians in the
community. Police protection is provided by the Maricopa
County Sheriff's Office, augmented by members of the
Sheriff's Posse of Sun City -- men and women who volunteer
their services 24 hours a day. The Posse helps prevent
crime through neighborhood watch programs, vacation watch,
traffic control and home security programs.
Sun City is age-restricted
-- one member of the household must be 55 or older and no
one under age 18 is permitted residence. The population is
approximately 45,000.
