Robert Livermore, our cities namesake, was born in 1799 in Springfield, Essex, England. He was a successful rancher that became very wealthy. After Livermore's death and  the opening of the railroad in 1869, California's earliest pioneers decided to lay out and develop a new town named after their old friend. By 1876 Livermore was incorporated and the population was 830. Livermore became prosperous in the late 19th century from mercantile industries and vineyards. Brick works and fuse manufacturing made further economic contributions after the turn of the century.
