Lowell's National Park is a tribute to the Industrial Revolution and the textile industry that boomed in New England in the nineteenth century. Several miles of trolley and canal boat tours complement the 19th  century rehabbed mill buildings.  The city offers many unique financial incentives to encourage new growth and development. The Middlesex Community College and University of Massachusetts at Lowell are located here. 

This planned urban community is built around the Merrimack River. Special events of the year include a folk festival which draws over 200,000 people annually, Riverfest, First Night, and Fourth of July fireworks. The Lowell Auditorium hosts many of the country's best performers.  The Merrimack Repertory theater plays to over 50,000 people each season.
