| Butte is
the seat of Bow County. In 1977, the city and county governments consolidated to form the sole entity of The City and County of Butte-Silver Bow.
The population was 33,889 as of the 2000 census. Between the late 19th
century and about 1919, Butte was one of the largest copper mining towns
in the West. There were hundreds of saloons, However, now it has the
dubious distinction of being home part of the largest Superfund site in the United States.
